This landscape master plan for a large biotech company headquartered in South San Francisco establishes a framework for growth, providing a high-level vision and guide for future development. The plan creates a vibrant and cohesive center that addresses access, wayfinding, and transit constraints and provides program direction for anticipating new buildings and increased employee density.
The resulting design, which integrates the site’s topography and a complex array of utilities, establishes scaled outdoor spaces that accommodate a hierarchy of uses: from large events such as farmers’ markets to open-air meetings to quiet contemplation. The network of pathways facilitates circulation and converges in a garden courtyard which serves as a quiet counterpoint to the busier parts on campus. This sheltered winter garden features a vibrant palette of native plantings. Designed to mitigate wind while providing access to sunlight, the space is an ideal setting for informal meetings, café seating, light exercise and walking.
