The Fountain Alley development will be an iconic addition to the cityscape of downtown San Jose. The 21-story mixed-use building will include 194 residential dwelling units, 32,000 square feet of ground floor retail, 400,000 square feet of office space, and four levels of parking on the 1.25-acre site. The landscape design was jointly conceptualized by BIG and Bionic, with Bionic leading the landscape design development and the entitlement process.
Fountain Alley is part of the system of “paseos” in downtown San Jose. The unique form of the building creates an urban room at its base, which serves as a transit-oriented pedestrian hub as well as the heart of the development, activated by retail facing plaza spaces with amenities, seating and gathering, water features and street vendors. While the formal qualities of the landscape are striking and unique, its materiality is immediately familiar and integrates easily with the downtown San Jose streetscapes. Richly planted balconies and terrace spaces create open-air gathering areas for both work and play, sensitive to the changing nature of work and socializing in a post-pandemic world.
