A grove of existing heritage redwood trees will be the centerpiece of this 1.5-acre public park, designed to breathe new life into downtown Sunnyvale. Spaces for children to play, a lawn, events and performances radiate from the grove while cafes, restaurants, and bars line the edges of the park to animate it with civic life. The redwoods and their extensive root systems presented a unique technical challenge, which the team addressed through a series of custom precast concrete walls and benches that span and contain the root zones. In the plaza, a digital water curtain animates the park during both the night and day with continuous patterns and graphics. The water curtain is a dynamic, sustainable, and water-wise icon for the center of Silicon Valley.
