Bionic led the design of the public realm for Emery Yards, a pedestrian-oriented life science campus that seamlessly integrates with the urban fabric. The landscape design breaks down the mega-block scale, creating a campus that is architecturally interesting, sustainable, and contributes to the quality and character of Emeryville. A network of new open spaces, plazas, and a pedestrian-priority shared public way provide new focal points along the existing Emeryville Greenway.

Privately owned, publicly accessible plazas are designed for year-round comfort, providing opportunities for outdoor co-working and socializing. These spaces are programmed with retail and amenities to activate them during both peak and off hours. A football-field-size green wall creates an attractive screening element for the project’s consolidated parking garage, and art pieces by Mildred Howard and Anne Weber enliven the public realm. The campus’s holistic and ambitious transportation strategy prioritizes pedestrians and bicycles and will be a key node for bicyclists, connecting Emeryville to San Francisco.
