The courtyard space of this multi-unit property is small, cold, and sloped. It offers little privacy and is noisy due to the proximity of a busy street, and also functions as the main entrance to one of the buildings it serves. In response, Bionic’s design includes a privacy screen made of copper pipe, mounted on an existing retaining wall. A water feature and fireplace are embedded into the same wall to address the micro-climatic conditions of the site. Two decks define the levels of the garden. Diagonal joints in the deck align to a steel stair stringer that spans the decks and floats over the woodland shade plants that line the slope. A dog run loops around the edges of the property in the building setback.
