63 acres
The vision plan for India Basin is a legacy waterfront park for the city and greater Bay Area, located in the southeastern quadrant of San Francisco. The project analyzed the unique and complex land and water sites spanning more than 63 acres and combined the varying interests of multiple property owners into one comprehensive plan to allow access to the shoreline.
Resilient and adaptive strategies such as living shorelines, retreat areas, and transition zones accommodate anticipated sea level rise as well as ensure a diverse and balanced mix of recreational, educational, and ecological services across the landscape in any future climate scenario. The design of the legacy waterfront park prioritizes environmental cleanup, accelerates parallel urban design efforts in the area, identifies and implements “early win” activation, and creates a seamless user experience that is accessible and available to all.
India Basin is an environmental justice community that does not have access to open space like the rest of the city. This project sought to bring equal access and equitable development to the neighborhoods in need. Developed through extensive, equitable, and inclusive engagement, the vision plan analyzed eight unique and complex land and water sites and combined the competing interests of five separate property owners and a diverse community into one comprehensive plan for over one mile of accessible and resilient shoreline.
The project included analysis of 12,400′ of shoreline.
The team developed a cohesive concept for the network of open spaces.
