The LinkedIn Middlefield campus transformed an outdated parking lot into an active landscape merging people, ecology, and infrastructure. Designed to accomplish ambitious and future focused ecological and social objectives, the campus rejects the ubiquitous recipe for suburban tech workplaces. The site is designed to promote public interaction, diverse ecologies, mobility, and year-round comfort. The landscape combines a complex stormwater system, adaptive habitats, and active and passive amentity spaces. Leveraging a multi-million dollar investment in air handling equipment and structural upgrades, the landscape is embedded with a condensate capture system that is used to irrigate habitats and the extensive mature shade canopy.
An illuminated footrail and fence provide wayfinding at night.
Condensate water collected from the air handling units on each building is directed to basins throughout the landscape to create bird baths, before it is deployed as supplemental irrigation.
Soils, plant communities, and grading were designed to preserve mature trees.
At the center of the campus, a 35,000 SF meadow collects and treats all of the site’s stormwater. It provides dynamic habitats for birds and pollinators as well as seasonal interest for human inhabitants.
