This project includes public and private opens spaces for a new 432-unit housing complex within the Parkmerced development in San Francisco. The project provides improvements to the public realm with generous tree-lined entrances, vegetated garden stoops, a flexible Neighborhood Commons for informal gatherings and activities, and temporal water retention areas designed as amenity spaces. Enclosed courtyards provide residents with amenities for gathering, child play areas, outdoor dining, and dog walking. The project’s outdoor spaces are designed in response to the site’s microclimates, accounting for wind and sun exposure. Coniferous trees and trellises with integral heaters shield spaces from westerly winds while enhancing human comfort when occupied. Material and plant selection were geared toward meeting the district’s sustainability goals with a plant palette composed primarily of low water use native species and surfacing materials chosen to allow for infiltration of stormwater.
