The sculpture garden for the San Francisco Fine Art Fair at Fort Mason created a striking and highly visible entry experience for visitors. Three miles of red rope suspended from an existing anchorage on the festival pavilion transformed an unremarkable parking lot, creating a porous canopy that allowed the ground plane to house art exhibits and to accommodate 15,000 people circulating through the space over a four-day period. The ropes also enriched visitors’ experience by acting as a kinetic sculpture, vibrating in the wind and generating abstract patterns of light and shadow. A halftone paving pattern made of 3,000 stickers reinforced the show’s branding and defined the route to the entry.
