The Loop transforms the neglected space under, around, over, and beside the 101 Highway into an urban park at a primary entrance to the city. Formerly an area that created serious fire, life, safety, and health hazards, the park assembles a series of remnant land parcels into one destination public open space. Streetscapes, bike lanes, sound walls, art installations, gardens, and gathering spaces form a “Loop” around the infrastructure of the freeway to make useful places for the community in this complex urban condition.  In a narrow strip along the busiest section of the bike lane, micro-businesses housed in iconic yellow structures create street activation and amenities.  An art program that interprets the necessity, impacts, and phenomena of the freeway lines the Loop and adds heightened experiences to each of the spaces.

The project included an extensive community engagement process.
